Carrying cargo: securing, limits and marking

The KET requires every load to be arranged and secured so it endangers no one. Here are the rules drivers are tested on.
Basic requirements
- The load must not obstruct the driver's view, impair the vehicle's stability or steering, cover lights, plates or signals, or create noise and dust.
- It must not fall or drag — securing (straps, nets) is the driver's responsibility, checked before and during the trip.
- Mass limits: the cargo (and passenger) mass and axle loads may not exceed the limits set by the manufacturer and the Ministry of Transport.
Marking protruding loads
A load protruding beyond the vehicle's front or rear by more than 1 metre, or sideways more than 40 cm from the side lights, must be marked: by day — with warning flags or reflective panels; in the dark or poor visibility — with a white light/reflector at the front and red at the rear. The 2026 KET amendments tightened these marking requirements.
Dangerous goods
Transporting dangerous goods (fuel, chemicals, gas) requires compliance with the ADR agreement: certified drivers, marked vehicles and special routing. For ordinary drivers the practical takeaway: jerrycans of fuel are limited and must be carried secured.
