C, CE, C1 and C1E driving licence categories

Category C licences allow you to drive medium and large goods vehicles, including trucks, carrying up to 8 passengers (excluding the driver). A category C licence opens up work as a truck driver, freight transport and long-haul routes.

C1 category

Vehicles with a maximum authorised mass between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg (not falling into D1 or D), designed to carry no more than 8 passengers excluding the driver. May be combined with a trailer up to 750 kg. Minimum age: 18.

C1E category

Combinations of a C1 vehicle with a trailer over 750 kg, and combinations of a category B towing vehicle with a trailer over 3,500 kg. The total maximum authorised mass of the combination may not exceed 12,000 kg. Minimum age: 18.

C category

Goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg, carrying up to 8 passengers excluding the driver; a trailer up to 750 kg may be attached. Minimum age: 21, or 18 for holders of the initial professional qualification for goods transport (Code 95).

CE category

Combinations of a category C vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg. This is the classic long-haul artic combination. Minimum age: 21, or 18 with the initial professional qualification.

To obtain any C-group category you must already hold category B, pass a medical check for group 2 drivers, and pass the Regitra theory (40 questions) and practical exams.
