AM category — mopeds and light quadricycles
Minimum age to obtain the licence: 15 years.
A moped is a two-wheeled motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of at least 25 km/h and no more than 45 km/h, an engine displacement of up to 50 cm³ (combustion engine) or a maximum net power of up to 4 kW (electric motor); or a three-wheeled motor vehicle within the same speed range, with displacement up to 50 cm³ (spark-ignition engine) or maximum net power up to 4 kW (other combustion or electric).
A light quadricycle is a four-wheeled motor vehicle with an unladen mass of up to 350 kg (batteries excluded for EVs), a maximum design speed of up to 45 km/h and the same 50 cm³ / 4 kW engine limits.
A1 category
Motorcycles with an engine over 50 cm³ but not over 125 cm³, power up to 11 kW, and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg; also tricycles up to 15 kW. Minimum age: 16 years.
A2 category
Motorcycles with power up to 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg, and not derived from a vehicle more than twice as powerful. Minimum age: 18 years.
A category
Tricycles over 15 kW and all motorcycles. Minimum age: 20 years (except tricycles), and you must have two years of A2 driving experience. The two-year A2 requirement does not apply to people aged 24 or over. The right to drive tricycles over 15 kW is granted from 21 years.
