Braking distance

Braking distance is the distance a vehicle travels from the moment the driver presses the brakes until it comes to a complete stop.

Stopping distance is the distance the car travels from the moment the driver notices an obstacle until the car stops completely.

Reaction time (reaction distance) is the distance the car travels from the instant the driver notices the obstacle until the brake pedal is pressed.

Braking distance depends on driving speed — and it gets longer as speed increases.

If your speed doubles, your braking distance becomes four times longer.

If your speed triples, your braking distance becomes nine times longer.
