D, DE, D1 and D1E bus driving licence categories

Category D covers vehicles designed to carry passengers with more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat — in other words, buses. Bus drivers are responsible for the safety of all their passengers, so category D requirements are among the strictest.

D1 category

Vehicles designed to carry up to 16 passengers (excluding the driver), with a length not exceeding 8 metres; a trailer up to 750 kg may be attached. Minimum age: 21 (lower with the initial professional qualification for passenger transport).

D1E category

Combinations of a D1 vehicle with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg. Minimum age: 21 (lower with the professional qualification).

D category

Vehicles designed to carry more than eight passengers excluding the driver; a trailer up to 750 kg may be attached. Minimum age: 24, reduced for drivers who have obtained the initial professional qualification for passenger transport (Code 95) — then from 21 (or 23 for certain routes).

DE category

Combinations of a category D bus with a trailer over 750 kg. Minimum age follows the D category rules.

To obtain a D-group category you must hold category B (in practice usually C as well), pass the group 2 medical check, and pass the Regitra theory exam (40 questions, max 8 mistakes) and practical exam.
