Code 95: what it is and who needs it

Code 95 is a marking on the driving licence confirming that the driver holds the initial or periodic professional qualification required across the EU for anyone driving trucks (C, CE) or buses (D) for hire or reward.
Who needs it
Long-haul truck drivers, city and intercity bus drivers, delivery drivers of vehicles over 3.5 t — everyone transporting goods or passengers commercially. Driving the same vehicle privately (not for work) does not require Code 95.
How to obtain it
- Hold the relevant licence category (e.g. C or D).
- Complete the initial professional qualification: an approved training course and exam covering safe and economical driving, cargo/passenger handling, rest-time rules and emergency conduct. The initial qualification also lowers the minimum age for C (18) and D (21) categories.
- The code is entered on the licence next to the category with its expiry date (format: 95.DD.MM.YYYY).
Renewal
Code 95 is valid for 5 years. To renew it, drivers complete 35 hours of periodic training at an approved centre — no exam needed for renewal. Driving professionally with an expired Code 95 brings fines both for the driver and the employer.
