Driving while the licence is being produced: not allowed

A classic situation: you have passed both Regitra exams, but the physical driving licence is still being produced. May you drive in the meantime?

The answer is no. Under Lithuanian law, only a driver holding a valid, issued driving licence may operate a vehicle. Although your exam results are already in Regitra's system, the right to drive legally takes effect only when the licence is produced and registered as valid. While its status is "being produced", driving counts as driving without a licence — with the corresponding fines and, in the event of an accident, serious insurance consequences.

How long does production take?

A standard licence is usually produced within a few working days; an express option (for an additional fee) can be ready the next working day. You can order delivery by courier or collect it at a Regitra branch, and track the status at vp.regitra.lt.

What about renewals?

The same logic applies when exchanging an expired licence: if the old licence has expired and the new one is not yet issued, you may not drive during the gap. Plan the exchange in advance — you can apply before the old licence expires.
