Residential zone: everything you need to know
📅 Updated 2026-09-06 · Skaityti lietuviškai 🇱🇹
A residential zone (Lithuanian: gyvenamoji zona) is a specially signed area where strict rules protect pedestrians. It is marked by a blue sign showing a house, a pedestrian and a car.
Core rules
- Speed limit 20 km/h for all vehicles.
- Pedestrians have priority over vehicles and may walk on the carriageway — but must not deliberately obstruct traffic.
- Overtaking is prohibited.
- Prohibited: parking with the engine idling for a long time, and parking heavy vehicles (over 3.5 t) outside marked spaces.
- When leaving a residential zone you must give way to all road users.

Exam relevance
Residential-zone questions test the 20 km/h limit, pedestrian priority, the exit give-way duty and the parking bans. Note that yard territories (courtyards) follow the same logic even without the sign. See also all speed limits in Lithuania.
