Driving Through Intersections

At the intersection of roads of unequal status, a driver traveling on a minor road must give way to vehicles approaching the intersection on the main road.

At the intersection of roads of equal status, the driver must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, if the trajectories of the vehicles intersect.

If the direction of the main road changes at an intersection, drivers traveling on the main road must follow the rules for driving through intersections of equal-status roads in relation to each other. Drivers traveling on minor roads must also follow these rules in relation to each other.

When turning left (or turning around), the driver must give way to vehicles traveling on a road of equal status in the opposite direction straight ahead or to the right, and at an intersection where overtaking is permitted, also to overtaking vehicles.

When turning left or right at an intersection, the driver must give way to road users (cyclists and others) crossing the lanes of the carriageway into which they are turning. When turning onto a road with one lane in each direction, the driver must give way to road users (cyclists and others) crossing any lane of the carriageway into which they are turning.

If the driver cannot determine the type of road surface, and there are no priority road signs, road signs "Junction with a minor road", "Minor road from the right" or "Minor road from the left", they must act as if traveling on a minor road.

It is prohibited to enter the intersection of carriageways if there is an obstacle in it or beyond it that would force the driver to stop at the intersection and obstruct the traffic of other vehicles.

When the permitting traffic light signal comes on, the driver must give way to vehicles exiting the intersection of carriageways in the intended direction (if the maneuver was started when their direction's signal was permitting) and let pass pedestrians finishing crossing the carriageway.

A driver who has entered the intersection of carriageways under a permitting traffic light signal is permitted to drive in the intended direction, regardless of the traffic light signal when exiting the intersection. However, if at the intersection, before the traffic lights along the route, there is a road sign "Stop line" and (or) a "Stop" line, the driver must obey each traffic light's signal.

When driving in the direction shown by the arrow that is lit in a supplementary section of the traffic light together with a yellow or red signal, the driver must give way to road users moving from other directions under a permitting traffic light signal, except for the case specified in paragraph 163.1 of the Rules.

When a prohibitory traffic light or controller signal is on, the driver must stop before the road sign "Stop line" and (or) the "Stop" line; where these are absent – before the traffic light, the crossing or joining carriageway, the pedestrian crossing, or the bicycle crossing, in such a way as not to obstruct vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

A driver who could only stop at the locations specified in paragraph 165 of the Rules by braking sharply when the yellow traffic light signal (or one in the form of a horizontal white bar) lights up or when the controller raises their hand is permitted to continue driving.

165. When traffic is regulated by a traffic light, the driver must comply with the traffic light signals, regardless of any road signs indicating priority. If the traffic light is switched off or its flashing yellow signal is on, the driver must comply with road signs.
