Driving at 16: the B1 licence and microcars

In Lithuania teenagers can get behind the wheel from age 16 with a B1 category licence. It covers light four-wheeled vehicles — including the increasingly popular microcars (Ligier, Aixam, Microcar, Casalini).
What you may drive with B1
- Light quadricycle cars with an unladen mass up to 400 kg (550 kg for goods versions, batteries excluded for EVs);
- Engine power up to 15 kW;
- Designed for no more than four occupants.
How to get it
- Medical certificate and first aid course — same as for category B.
- Theory exam at Regitra: 30 questions / 30 minutes / 80% (€10).
- Driving school practical training and the Regitra practical exam with a B1-class vehicle.
Worth knowing
- A full category B licence automatically covers B1 — B1 makes sense only for 16–17-year-olds.
- B1 holders follow novice driver rules: 0.0‰ alcohol limit and reduced speed limits.
- Microcars are limited by design (typically 45–90 km/h versions) — check the specific model's class before buying.
