Quad bikes in Lithuania: types, required licences and road rules
In short: Lithuania distinguishes three quad types: the light quadricycle (up to 350 kg and 45 km/h — AM category from age 15), the quadricycle (up to 400 kg and 15 kW — B1 from 16, or B) and the heavy quad (over 15 kW — B or a motorcycle category depending on registration). Public roads require a registered, insured quad with a valid inspection; motorways and expressways are off-limits, and the out-of-town limit is 70 km/h.
⚠️ AM category change from 2026-11-01: under amendments to the Road Safety Act, from 1 November the theory exam alone will no longer suffice for AM — a practical exam becomes mandatory (taken on a two-wheeled moped, with motorcycle-gear requirements), practical lessons at a school become compulsory, and the minimum age rises from 15 to 16. The old procedure applies until 31 October.

Rules on public roads
- Motorways and expressways are prohibited for all quad types (what else is banned on motorways).
- Maximum speed for quads outside built-up areas — 70 km/h.
- A helmet is mandatory, unless the quad has a rigid cab with seat belts.
- Passengers only in manufacturer-designated seats; children follow the general child-safety rules, and the driver answers for passengers under 16.
- In forests and on shorelines you may ride only on roads — riding on forest floor or dunes triggers environmental fines up to several hundred euros, and repeat offences can cost the vehicle itself.
Registration, insurance, inspection
For public roads a quad must be registered with Regitra, carry a number plate, hold valid compulsory insurance and pass the periodic technical inspection (first after 3 years, then every 24 months, as for the L class). Unregistered "sport" quads may run only on closed grounds and private land — taking one onto a public road is an offence. Alcohol limits match cars: 0.4‰ for experienced and 0.0‰ for novice drivers, including farm tracks that count as public roads.
Work vs leisure: which quad to choose
- For farm work — cargo quadricycles (up to 550 kg) with B1/B: they tow trailers and mounted equipment; for heavier tractor-class jobs see the tractor licence.
- City and young riders — light quads from 15 with AM: limited speed, minimal requirements.
- Off-road recreation — heavy quads: proper licences required, plus usually a trailer to reach legal riding grounds.
Before buying, check the papers: the same physical quad may be registered as L6e, L7e or even tractor-class machinery, and that entry — not the looks — decides which licence you need and where you may ride. Verify the kW figure (the 15 kW line separates B1 from B), the VIN against the documents, and whether inspection and insurance are current — without them you cannot legally drive it even home.
