What is prohibited on motorways and expressways

Motorways (Lithuanian: automagistralė) are built for fast, uniform traffic, so the KET bans a range of road users and manoeuvres on them. The same logic largely applies to expressways.
Prohibited road users
- Pedestrians, cyclists, mopeds, horse riders, animal-drawn carts and driven livestock.
- Tractors, all types of quadricycles and other slow vehicles whose design speed is below the required minimum.
Prohibited manoeuvres
- Stopping or parking anywhere except designated rest areas; the emergency lane may be used only for genuine emergencies (breakdown, health emergency) with hazard lights on. A rest stop or phone call — only in a parking area.
- U-turns and reversing are strictly prohibited, including using the crossovers in the central reservation (they are for emergency and road services only).
- Entering or leaving outside official slip roads.
Speed on motorways
Cars and motorcycles: up to 130 km/h in summer (April–October) and 110 km/h in winter (November–March); novice drivers up to 100 km/h. There is also a minimum speed requirement — see the minimum motorway speed explained and all speed limits.
