Minimum speed on motorways and expressways

Motorways are designed for fast traffic, so the KET bans vehicles that cannot keep up. Slow vehicles — tractors, quadricycles, mopeds and any vehicle whose design speed is too low — may not enter motorways or expressways at all.

What the rules require

• A vehicle whose maximum design speed is below the motorway threshold may not use the motorway; this is why tractors and quads are banned even if the driver is willing to drive faster.
• Drivers must not drive unnecessarily slowly and obstruct normal traffic flow (KET Rule 135.3) — this applies on all roads, and especially on motorways and expressways.
• If you must drive significantly slower than the flow (e.g. after a technical fault), keep to the right lane and leave the motorway at the nearest exit; in an emergency, stop on the emergency lane with hazard lights on.

Fines

Obstructing traffic by driving unnecessarily slowly or occupying the left lane without reason can bring a fine of €30–90 under the Administrative Offences Code. Combined with the maximum limits (130/110 km/h seasonal), the practical takeaway: keep close to the flow speed, use the right lane, overtake on the left.
