Child car seat rules: height, age and responsibility

Lithuanian rules on carrying children follow the EU framework: the deciding factor is the child's height, not just age.
Core requirements
- Children shorter than 135 cm must be carried in a child restraint (seat or booster) appropriate to their height and weight, approved to UN R44 or R129 (i-Size).
- An infant carrier placed rear-facing on the front seat requires the front airbag to be deactivated.
- Children may travel without a restraint from 135 cm, using the standard seat belt.
- The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers under 16 are properly restrained.
Seat belt basics
Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants in all seats. The belt must lie across the shoulder and pelvis — never under the arm or behind the back. A correctly used three-point belt reduces injury risk by 50–60%, which is exactly why the KET treats belt violations strictly.
Exam relevance
Typical Regitra questions cover: the 135 cm threshold, the rear-facing/airbag rule, and the driver's responsibility for minors. Fines for carrying a child without a proper restraint follow the general passenger-safety articles of the Administrative Offences Code.
