Tractor licence in Lithuania — how to get it and from what age
A tractor driver's licence is required by everyone who wants to legally operate tractors or self-propelled machinery in agriculture, construction and similar work. In Lithuania tractor licences fall into several categories: TR1, TR2, SZ (self-propelled agricultural machinery) and SM (self-propelled non-agricultural machinery). The most common are TR1 and TR2 — these are what people mean by "tractor licence".
TR1 category
Grants the right to drive wheeled and tracked tractors with engine power up to 60 kW, tractor-trailer combinations and other agricultural machinery. Training may start at 15, but driving on public roads is allowed only once the licence is issued at 16. TR1 is the base category — without it, higher categories cannot be obtained.
TR2 category
For more powerful tractors (engine power of 60 kW and above). To take the TR2 exam you must already hold TR1; training may start at 17. TR2 covers larger tractors and more complex machinery (e.g. combines, if you also hold the SZ certificate). TR2 requires at least basic education, and TR1 qualifies alongside it if you did not have it before.
How to get a tractor licence
Apply to a driving school or training centre that runs tractor-operator courses. You will complete a theory course (tractor construction, traffic rules, safety at work with machinery) and practical driving sessions (field and closed-course driving). After training you take theory and practical exams, administered by the municipal state commission or Regitra depending on the category. On passing, the tractor operator's certificate is issued.
From what age can you drive a tractor?
TR1 — from 16 (training from 15), TR2 — from 17. Notably, if you already hold a driving licence, a category B licence lets you drive TR1-class tractors (up to 60 kW) without a separate certificate, while C or D holders may also drive the more powerful TR2-class tractors. In other words, with a truck licence you can drive both TR1 and TR2 tractors without extra exams. If you hold no driving category at all, the full training course and exams are required for TR1 (and TR2 if needed).
