Road Traffic Rules changes from 2026-01-01 in Lithuania
Below is a clear summary of the amendments approved by the Lithuanian Government in 2025. They affect electric micromobility devices, railway level crossings, new and amended road signs, number plates and protruding loads, and the marking of road-works vehicles. 🚦
📅 Entry into force
All changes take effect on 1 January 2026.
🔋 Electric micromobility devices (e-scooters, e-bikes etc.)
- Riding is allowed only on a device with a working brake, bell, white front light, red rear light and orange reflectors on both sides.
- On the carriageway a high-visibility reflective vest is mandatory, or the white front and red rear lights must be on.
- After dark or in poor visibility: front white and rear red lights must be on and the reflective vest worn.
- A helmet is mandatory for everyone — bicycle, skateboard or motorcycle type, worn and fastened. 🪖
- Additional body protection (elbow, knee pads etc.) is recommended.
- For rental devices, the helmet must be provided by the rental operator.
🚉 Railway level crossings
It is prohibited to drive or walk onto a crossing when the barrier is lowered, lowering or rising. Lifting the barrier yourself or driving (walking) around it is also prohibited. ❌

🚗 Number plates and protruding loads
- Number plates may not be covered with protective materials, bent or otherwise reshaped; they must not be damaged, dirty or rusty.
- The Regitra-issued plate must be fixed in a clearly visible place at the rear of the vehicle and/or trailer. If a bicycle carrier at the rear hides the plate, a separate Regitra plate at the back is mandatory.
- Loads or equipment protruding more than 1 m at the front or rear (or sideways at all) are marked with 400 mm squares bearing 50 mm diagonal red-and-white reflective stripes, mounted 0.4–1.6 m above the ground.
- After dark or in poor visibility the marking lights must be on: white at the front, orange on the sides, red at the rear.

Road-works vehicles are marked at the front, sides and rear with red-and-white diagonal reflective stripes, per the procedure approved by the Minister of Transport for fencing work sites on roads.
