Learning to drive with a family member: the rules

In Lithuania you may legally practise category B driving with a family driving instructor before getting your licence. The key requirements:
- The learner has passed the theory exam at Regitra and is at least 17 years old.
- The family instructor has at least 5 years of category B driving experience and has never had their licence revoked for traffic violations.
- The car's parking brake lever must be between the driver's and passenger's seats — vehicles with a foot-operated or electronic parking brake out of the passenger's reach may not be used for family training.
Marking and documents
- The front and rear of the car must carry clearly visible "M" plates as required by KET.
- The instructor must carry documents proving the family relationship and their driving experience, and present them at a roadside check.
- Both the learner and instructor must be sober; the instructor is treated as the person responsible for the vehicle.
Speed limits for learners
Learner drivers follow novice limits: max 100 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on expressways, 80 km/h on asphalt roads (see speed limits in Lithuania).
Family practice supplements — but does not replace — driving school training: the mandatory school hours and the school exam still apply before the Regitra practical exam.
