Speed signs: maximum, minimum and recommended

Lithuanian roads use three visually distinct families of speed signs — and the Regitra exam loves testing whether you can tell them apart.

1. Prohibitory (maximum) speed signs

Round, white with a red border. You may not drive faster than the number shown. Valid until the nearest junction, a cancelling sign or an end-of-restriction sign.

2. Mandatory (minimum) speed signs

Round with a blue background. You must drive at the shown speed or faster (conditions permitting). Used on lanes or roads where slow traffic would be dangerous.

3. Advisory (recommended) speed signs

Square with a blue background. They recommend the shown speed until the nearest junction — typically before dangerous bends or uneven sections. Not obligatory, but exceeding the advised speed in the conditions the sign warns about can count against you after an accident.

How they interact with general limits

A sign may lower or raise the limit for a section, but your speed may never exceed the maximum set by the KET for your vehicle type (e.g. 130 km/h for cars on summer motorways). See all speed limits in Lithuania.
