Carrying Cargo

📚 Detailed rules
The mass of the cargo (passengers) being transported and the load on the axle(s) must not exceed those established for that vehicle by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania and the manufacturer. The mass of the trailer being towed (with or without cargo) must not exceed the maximum permissible mass established by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania and the manufacturer. It is prohibited to tow trailers of non-motorized vehicles with a motor vehicle, as well as to tow trailers of motor vehicles with a non-motorized vehicle.
Cargo in category N and O vehicles must be arranged and (or) secured in accordance with the requirements for cargo arrangement and (or) securing in category N and O vehicles established by the Director of the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration. Cargo in vehicles of all categories must be placed and, if necessary, secured and covered in such a way that:
208.1. it does not impair the driver's visibility;
208.2. it does not affect the stability of the vehicle and does not interfere with driving it;
208.3. it does not cover the external lighting devices, light reflectors, registration plates, distinguishing marks and signals given;
208.4. it does not fall, drag along, produce noise, or pollute the road and the environment;
208.5. it does not endanger people or material values, or damage road equipment and technical traffic control devices.
The driver must immediately remedy any deficiencies in the arrangement and (or) securing of the cargo; if this cannot be done, they must stop driving.
If the cargo protrudes from the front or rear of the vehicle by more than 1 m beyond the vehicle's dimensions, or its lateral edge protrudes at all beyond the vehicle's lateral dimension, it must be marked as specified in Annex 4 of the Rules.
- The outermost edge points of cargo or of vehicles wider than 2.6 m that protrude more than 1 m beyond the dimensions of the vehicle at the front or rear, or that protrude at all to the side, must be marked with distinguishing marks – squares with a side length of 400 mm with alternating reflective diagonal white and red stripes 50 mm wide. These marks must be attached to the vehicle no lower than 0.4 m and no higher than 1.6 m from the ground. During the dark hours of the day or in poor visibility, lamps must be lit at the indicated places on the vehicle – white from the front, orange from the sides, and red from the rear.
When carrying dangerous goods, the requirements of the Republic of Lithuania Law on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, Rail and Inland Waterway, its implementing legal acts, the European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) and its Technical Annexes A and B must be complied with.
It is prohibited to continue driving a vehicle until violations of the requirements for transporting heavy and (or) oversized cargo or dangerous goods that endanger people and the environment are remedied.
