📚 Detailed rules
Before starting to move across a railway crossing and while moving across it, the road user must comply with road signs, road markings, the position of the barrier, signals from traffic lights, audio signals, and signals from railway crossing attendants (controllers). Before starting to move across a railway crossing, the road user must in all cases make sure that no rail vehicle is approaching the railway crossing. It is recommended that children under 12 years old crossing a railway crossing be accompanied by an accompanying person.
At a railway crossing, the road user must give way to an approaching rail vehicle.
When giving way to an approaching rail vehicle, as well as when driving across a railway crossing is prohibited, the driver must stop before the "Stop" line, the road sign "Stop", the traffic light, the lifting barrier; where these are absent – at a distance of no less than 10 m from the first rail. The driver must stop before the "Stop" line when it is used with the road sign "Stop", or where there is no line, before the said road sign, even when the white traffic light signal is flashing.
If a vehicle is forced to stop at a railway crossing, the driver must immediately disembark the passengers, take all actions to move the vehicle off the railway crossing; if moving it does not succeed, signal to the operator of the approaching rail vehicle. A stop signal is considered to be the circular waving of an arm during light hours of the day – with a brightly colored, clearly visible object; during dark hours of the day – with a torch or lamp.
Vehicles whose width exceeds 5 m or whose height from the road surface exceeds 4.5 m (with or without cargo), as well as slow-moving machines and mechanisms with a speed of less than 8 km/h, are permitted to drive across a railway crossing only after obtaining a permit from the railway infrastructure manager.
The road user is prohibited from:
173.1. moving across the railway in places not designated for this purpose;
173.2. going around other vehicles that have stopped before a railway crossing to let pass a rail vehicle;
173.3. driving or walking onto a railway crossing when the barrier is lowered or starting to lower, arbitrarily raising the barrier or going around (passing) it;
173.4. entering a railway crossing if there is an obstacle beyond it that would force the driver to stop on the railway crossing;
173.5. carrying across a railway crossing agricultural, road, construction or other machines that have not been specially prepared for transportation, if this could damage the equipment of the railway crossing;
173.6. crossing a railway crossing in a wheelchair for persons with disabilities without an accompanying person;
173.7. lingering or loitering on a railway crossing, as well as staying on it longer than needed to cross or pass through it.
