Warning Signals
This page presents the official Lithuanian Road Traffic Rules (KET) on the topic of "warning signals", valid throughout the Republic of Lithuania under the 2026 rules. Understanding these provisions is essential for passing the theory exam at Regitra and for participating safely in traffic. Each provision below links to the official consolidated KET.

📚 Detailed rules
The following are warning signals: switching on turn or brake light signals (may be shown by hand); sounding the audio signal; switching headlight beams; switching on the hazard warning signals or flashing orange warning lights; setting up the emergency stop sign or attaching it to the vehicle.
The driver must warn by means of the turn signals of the corresponding direction; if there are no light signals or they are out of order – by hand:
82.1. before starting to drive and before stopping;
82.2. before changing lanes, before overtaking and ending overtaking, before going around an obstacle and ending going around it, before turning right or left, before turning around, when exiting an intersection with circular traffic.
The left turn signal corresponds to the left arm extended to the side, or the right arm extended to the side and bent perpendicularly upward at the elbow.
The right turn signal corresponds to the right arm extended to the side, or the left arm extended to the side and bent perpendicularly upward at the elbow.
The braking signal is shown by the left or right arm raised upward.
Warning signals must be started in advance of the maneuver (or braking related to the maneuver) and ended immediately after the maneuver (signaling by hand may end just before the maneuver). The signal must be shown in such a way that it does not mislead other road users. Turn signals are not shown when entering an intersection with circular traffic.
A driver showing a signal does not acquire the right of way.
In built-up areas, the use of audio signals is not permitted, except in cases where they are necessary to avoid a traffic accident.
In order to attract the attention of the driver of the vehicle being overtaken, headlight beams may be switched; outside built-up areas – an audio signal may be used.
It is prohibited to use high beams as a warning signal if they may dazzle other drivers (including through the rear-view mirror).
Hazard warning signals on a vehicle, if installed, must be switched on:
91.1. when forced to stop where stopping or parking is prohibited;
91.2. in the event of a traffic accident;
91.3. when stopped by an inspecting official;
91.4. when stopped on unlit road sections during the dark hours of the day or in poor visibility, and when driving during the dark hours of the day or in poor visibility, if at least one rear position light is not lit;
91.5. when it is being towed or transported with its front or rear lifted onto a special support device;
91.6. when the driver is being dazzled;
91.7. when it is desired to warn other drivers about an obstacle or danger;
91.8. during the boarding (alighting) of children to (from) a vehicle bearing distinguishing marks for transporting children.
If a vehicle has no hazard warning signals or they are out of order, and it is forced to stop where stopping or parking is prohibited, or in the event of a traffic accident, as well as if it is forced to stop in a place where the stopped vehicle would be seen by other road users at a distance of less than 100 m, the driver of a motor vehicle (except a moped, motorcycle without a trailer), tractor or self-propelled machine must immediately set up an emergency stop sign on that side of the carriageway, against the direction of vehicle traffic: in built-up areas – at a distance of no less than 25 m, and outside built-up areas – at a distance of no less than 50 m from the stopped vehicle. If, when driving during the dark hours of the day or in poor visibility, at least one rear position light has broken and the hazard warning signals do not work, an emergency stop sign must be attached to the rear of the vehicle in order to continue driving.
The driver must switch on the flashing orange warning lights during the boarding (alighting) of pupils to (from) the school bus. When the school bus is moving, the flashing orange warning lights must be switched off.
